Before you leave home, print out a listing of restaurants for Sterling, Soldotna, and Kenai from Switchboard.com. As they say, "Its the Yellow Pages. Electrified™." Type in "eating out" and the city of interest, for example "Sterling, AK". When the list appears, sort by distance. From these lists you will know where all the familiar chain restaurants and fast-food restaurants are located. There are many of these you can dine at and know what to expect. You'll also get a listing of local non-chain restaurants. Quality of food at these local restaurants varies widely. Just because it says "World Famous," doesn't mean it is famously good. So ask your host wherever you are staying what they recommend. The locals know.
Following are a few non-chain restaurants I can heartily recommend:
Veronica's Coffeehouse in Kenai is an absolute must. Top of the list. Very reasonable prices. Oozes with charm and good food.
Be sure and catch the prime rib dinners at the Tustumena Lodge just south of Kasilof on the Sterling Highway. The lodge dining area is not fancy, but their food is well worth driving for.
Suzie's Cafe on the Sterling Highway in Sterling. Good food, and lots of it. This is where the locals go.
Buckets Sports Grill at the Kenai Spurr junction on Sterling Highway. Great burgers.
